The Problem with Your Brain

  Your brain is made of millions of cells called neurons. When these neurons communicate with each other, they use electrical signals. The combined electric signals create oscillations, known as brainwaves.

  Different brainwaves are associated with different mental states, like being focused & energized, versus being tired and slow. The problem comes when our brain waves become dysfunctional.

But this isn’t a problem of effort, or not “trying hard enough”. The real cause of the problem is likely just an issue of too many slow brain waves (theta brainwaves) at the front of your brain (prefrontal cortex).

  And the unfortunate truth is that even if you put in the same amount of time as other players, but you struggle with focus, reaction speed, or information processing you will improve MUCH slower. 

  In other words, those players with better brains can focus longer, learn faster, and perform better, ultimately allowing them to succeed faster in esports. Fortunately, with something called neurofeedback, you might be able to build yourself a better brain!

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback works similarly to how you learned to ride a bike. Through something called operant conditioning, you learned how to balance through making small adjustments and feeling the feedback of balance or falling. Eventually, with enough feedback and practice time, your brain learned how to ride a bike. And now it’s completely natural!

With a similar system of feedback, we can teach our brains to snap into the optimal state of mind using brainwave-reading EEG headsets and neurofeedback software.

Scientific Research & Benefits

  There are 700+ peer-reviewed studies using neurofeedback, showing just how effective it can be. But here are just some high-quality findings from recent, placebo-controlled studies:

10.95% Better Mental Performance

A study used a test called the Mental Rotations Test to test spatial processing and general intelligence. In esports, these are both important. Being a smarter player with a greater ability to process spatial information would be powerful!

As for the results, the neurofeedback group showed a 10.95% increase in their mental rotations scores. And while the control group had a 5.9 increase in performance score, the neurofeedback group had a 12.8 improvement. This is over a 2x advantage for the neurofeedback group over the control! [1]

38.23% Boost in Visual Working Memory

During this study, they used a well-known visual working memory task called the Delayed Matching to Sample Task. In any competitive game, your visual and spatial awareness is critical for understanding what is happening. If you start to forget this information or don’t absorb it, your game sense will fail.

Participants who had neurofeedback training increased their visual working memory performance by 38.23% over the experiment! [2]

26.30% Faster Skill Execution

In this study, they tested participants on their surgical technique and how quickly they could complete the surgery. Surgery may be one of the greatest comparison activities for esports, as it also involves fine motor skills & mental complexity over a sustained period of time.

Using an SMR protocol, the neurofeedback group showed significant surgical technique improvement and considerably reduced time on task by 26.30%! This suggests that this neurofeedback can lead to substantial improvements in both mental and physical speed. [3]

55.56% Enhanced Accuracy

In this study, participants underwent two pistol shooting tasks to evaluate neurofeedback’s effect on shooting performance. 

Their accuracy increased around 55.56% over the training! And when comparing the neurofeedback group’s final scores to the control group, we can see the neurofeedback group has around a 75% greater score. What is also interesting to note is that the control group actually reduced in performance, which may indicate a sort of plateau effect in their skill. But the neurofeedback had the opposite trend, suggesting a potential benefit for overcoming skill plateaus. [4]

10.11% FASTER REACTION TIME

This study used a TOVA test, which measured attention and reaction time. Of course, in almost any game, better reaction times allow you to react faster than the enemy and get an advantage!

The group using beta 1 neurofeedback reduced their reaction time by 37ms (a 10.11% improvement over baseline)! [5]
